The RHGS team is undertaking a comprehensive scoping review to examine how equity has been conceptualized and implemented within regional and sub-regional health governance frameworks over the past two decades. As global health challenges continue to expose disparities in access, rights, and outcomes, understanding the role of equity in governance has become essential.
Research Purpose
This project seeks to understand how “equity” appears—or fails to appear—within governance mechanisms, legal frameworks, and institutional mandates across multiple regions, including the Americas, Africa, and Europe. By mapping both academic scholarship and policy documents, the review aims to reveal patterns, gaps, and emerging approaches that shape how regions pursue fair and inclusive health governance.
Guiding Research Questions
The review is structured around two central research questions:
- RQ1: Between 2005–2025, has equity been deployed in health governance in regional and sub-regional contexts?
- RQ2: What is the extent, range, and nature of that deployment across different regions and institutions?
These questions guide a systematic exploration of the legal, normative, and operational dimensions of regional governance.
